What Does Our In-Office Lab Work Include?

A separate lab trip takes time you may not have. At Women's HealthFirst, most of the lab work your provider orders can be collected right here in our office, processed quickly, and reviewed with you directly. Our in-house phlebotomy services mean that blood draws happen at your appointment, not as a separate errand, and results come back to the provider who already knows your history and your care plan. In-office lab work at Women's HealthFirst covers a comprehensive range of women's health testing needs:

Have been referred for specific diagnostic testing by their Women's HealthFirst provider

Your Women's HealthFirst provider will let you know which labs are being ordered and whether any preparation is required. Some tests, including certain metabolic panels and fasting glucose tests, require you to avoid eating or drinking anything other than water for eight to twelve hours beforehand. Others have no preparation requirements at all.

If you are unsure whether you need to fast before your appointment, contact our office and we will confirm based on the specific tests ordered. Always bring your insurance card and photo ID to your appointment.

Blood draws are performed by our trained phlebotomy team in our office. The process is quick, as most draws take only a few minutes. A small needle is used to collect the required sample from a vein, typically in the arm. If you have a history of difficult draws or tend to feel lightheaded, let our team know beforehand and we will take appropriate precautions.

Some tests, such as STI screening, may involve a urine sample or a swab rather than a blood draw. Your provider or clinical team will walk you through exactly what is needed before collection begins.

Lab results are processed and reviewed by your Women's HealthFirst provider. Standard results are typically available within a few business days, depending on the type of test and the processing lab. Your provider will follow up with you directly to review findings and discuss next steps. Results may also appear in your AthenaHealth patient portal.

If a result requires prompt attention, our team will contact you directly. You do not need to call to check on routine results; we will reach out when they are ready.

Routine preventive screenings — including certain STI tests and prenatal panels — may be covered differently than diagnostic tests, and laboratory fees are sometimes billed separately from your office visit.

Our team can help you verify your benefits before your appointment and walk you through any anticipated costs. We accept Aetna, Blue Shield PPO, Cigna HMO, Cofinity PPO, and most major insurance plans.
